[Geoje=News] By Shin Jung-cheol Reporter = Some of the children’s sex education books at the main public library in Geoje, Gyeongnam, are controversial for their excessive sensationalism and harmfulness.

This was revealed by Kim Sun-min, a member of the Geoje City Council, through a corrective question at the 244th plenary session of the Geoje City Council.

During the municipal question, Rep. Kim borrowed about 30 controversial sex education books from five Geoje City libraries (Azu, Suyang, Jangpyeong, Okpo, and Hachong), the Geoje Library of the Gyeongsangnam-do Office of Education, and seven libraries, including a small library in an apartment, and showed them in person at the plenary session to expose the reality of controversial sex education books that contain obscene and perverted sexual acts.

“These are words that I don’t even dare to say, but books filled with such obscene content are being placed in public libraries in Geoje City, exposing children to them unprotectedly,” Kim said, explaining the seriousness of the books he had seen.

In addition, the contents of books borrowed from the seven libraries mentioned by Rep. Kim were found to be uncomfortable for real adults.

“I’ve been categorizing the books I borrowed into upper, middle, and lower levels,” said Rep. Kim, “so why can’t an adult read them when they’re in the Geoje City Public Library and children are reading.”

Kim also read ‘Men, Women, and the Third Gender, There Are Not Only Women and Men in the World’ and said, “Article 36 of the Constitution states that marriage and family life shall be established and maintained on the basis of individual dignity and equality of the sexes, and the state guarantees this.” “In other words, the book directly violates the Constitution, which states that a man and a woman are the basis of marriage and family life,” he said.

Kim said, “We have pornography prevention education in schools, but pornography is being spread in libraries. We cannot allow obscene books disguised as sex education materials to be left unattended in public places that are funded by the public’s tax dollars,” Kim said, calling for improvements to the mismanagement of public institutions.

In addition, the Supreme Court ruling on the violation of the Child Welfare Act of 2022 was displayed as a presentation to illustrate the difficulties of children and adolescents exercising their right to sexual self-determination.

Representative Kim pointed out that “obscene books that wear the mask of sex education textbooks are defenselessly exposed in Geoje City public libraries, small libraries at all levels, and school libraries in Geoje,” and said, “It is urgent to immediately collect and dispose of controversial books that are harmful to sex education and take measures to prevent recurrence.”

In response, the regional director of Geoje City’s Welfare Bureau said, “Along with my personal view that it is inappropriate as a sex education book, I plan to request the Publication Ethics Committee to review the list of 140 complained about directly from Geoje City.”
