The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education announced on the 19th that it is promoting three policies for better school libraries centered on reading education.

Last year, the provincial education department staffed all school libraries with librarians and librarian teachers, the highest rate in the country at 99 percent.

As a result, the number of hours spent in library and collaborative classes increased by 55.9 percentage points year-on-year, and the number of students participating in reading programs increased by 34 percentage points year-on-year.

Building on these achievements, the provincial education department is promoting the “Three Policies for Better School Libraries” this year, which will result in more learning and more students.

First, it’s a school library that nurtures creativity and potential.

Operating a library gap (20 minutes of immersive reading) ▲ Holding a book content contest for student participation ▲ Establishing an online interactive reading education support system ‘Reading Road’ by level ▲ Practicing reading education at the student’s eye level, which is customized reading education for students.

Library binges are intensive reading activities that allow students to take advantage of breaks before class, during recess, at lunch, and after school.

The average middle school student can read an average of 43.2 books (200 pages) per year if he or she reads the library five days a week.

In addition, the “Book Content Contest” where students can recommend books to their friends using QR codes increases interest in books, and the collaborative reading education between counselors and librarians helps students adjust to school life.

The second is the school library, which supports the growth of the entire educational community.

We operate the ‘Instant Book’ system, which allows teachers to purchase materials for their classes without a review process, and collect classroom materials in a separate shelf to support teachers’ teaching.

We strive to improve students’ literacy skills by expanding access to school libraries, information literacy education, and curriculum-related reading activities.

Finally, school libraries are the place where every student can fulfill his or her future dreams.

The MOE provides customized training for professionals, expands research circles, and refreshes school libraries to strengthen the capacity of reading education professionals and help libraries become customized spaces for education.

Last year, 117 school library research circles conducted research on reading education and information literacy education. In 2024, the government will provide various training programs to strengthen the capabilities of research groups and share and spread research results through presentations.

Last year, the Ministry of Education promoted the restructuring of 100 school libraries that have been open for 15 years. This year, it will expand the scope to school libraries that have been open for 11 years and promote the ‘Library Refresh’ project to support future education.”It is said that reading is a journey while sitting, and traveling is reading while traveling,” said Lim Tae-hee, superintendent of the Gyeonggi-do Office of Education.
